We are thrilled to share a heartwarming update from Project Green Fork (PGF) and its impactful initiative, the 901 Save the Food Challenge. This program, dedicated to raising awareness about the profound effects of surplus and wasted food, has reached a significant milestone. Our partners have generously donated more than 5,000 pounds of surplus food, which would have otherwise gone to waste.
A Collective Effort for a Sustainable Community
At the heart of the 901 Save the Food Challenge is the collaboration between PGF and local restaurants and special event centers in Memphis. Together, we are working tirelessly to reduce food waste and promote sustainable practices throughout our community. Our dedicated partners have played a crucial role in this initiative, showcasing their commitment to making a positive impact on both the environment and the lives of those in need.
See the full list of participating restaurants by neighborhood: Crosstown, Evergreen, Vollintine-Evergreen, and Downtown Memphis. Special event centers, including the Renasant Convention Center, FedExForum, and Germantown Performing Arts Center, have also been instrumental in this work, donating leftover food from events and catering programs.
To measure and track these impactful donations, we’ve partnered with CareIt, a renowned food-sharing platform connecting surplus food from businesses with local charities. Through this user-friendly app, organizations can seamlessly contribute to the fight against food insecurity in Memphis. The CareIt platform has become an essential tool in our mission, making it easy for our partners to redirect surplus food to those who need it most.
Variety in Nourishment, Hope in Every Bite
The donated surplus food consists of a diverse range of items, including fresh produce, prepared meals, baked goods, and packaged ingredients. This variety ensures that the donations not only combat food waste but also provide a wide array of nutritious options for individuals and families facing food insecurity.
Our partners have been integral parts of the city’s culinary scene and are equally committed to making a positive social impact. The success of this food donation initiative would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of each chef and operations team involved.
